Baby Mine

Two female orcas teaching the ropes to the pod’s newest edition. Orcas are incredibly social and family oriented beings. Being in the water with them and their newborn, you could almost feel the love oozing from the entire pod over their brand new baby. This little one was likely only a few weeks old. How did we stumble upon this once-in-a-lifetime moment? After spotting spouts in the distance of the coast of Baja California, we came upon a group of 3 juvenile orcas. They playfully approached the boat several times, coming in close and surfacing right next to us. The trio slowly guided us further out to sea. They spyhopped again and again, and it really felt as if they were saying “are you coming or NOT?!” The juveniles led us right to the rest of their pod. There were four more orcas including a newborn baby! The pod brought the calf right over to the boat again and again. Maybe proud to show off their newest family member? It seemed as if the pod were teaching the newborn what a boat was. We could also see a mobula ray in one of the females’ mouth. Maybe the baby was being shown how to hunt? An incredible and magical day with this family of orcas!
