The Weight of Survival

There is a quiet reverence in seeing a rhino in the wild—a privilege that grows rarer with each passing year. Photographed in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, this rhino stands in the fading light, its horn deliberately removed by the reserve to protect it from poachers. A cruel irony—stripping it of its most iconic feature in a desperate bid to save its life. And yet, despite what has been taken, it remains. Strong. Resilient. A living testament to survival against the odds. The oxpecker, its ever-watchful companion, perches like a sentinel, a whisper of the delicate symbiosis that still endures in the wild. As the sky burns gold behind them, I can’t help but wonder—how many more sunsets will they see?
