Watchful Mother

Photographed by Stephen Taglieri

A female barred owl perches on a tree branch to watch her nearby nest. Her owlet explores the surrounding canopy as its mother maintains a safe distance, constantly providing food and a watchful eye for danger. The nest was located in a tree hollow near a boat ramp in Alexandria, Virginia, and the inquisitive owls constantly watched the photographers below.
