Between worlds
Photographed by Mark Mortensen
This portrait features Phil Lewis, encountered at the Forster Beach Baths in northern New South Wales. Known among fellow photographers as “The Frogfather,” Phil is an underwater and macro photographer with a particular passion for nocturnal frog photography in national parks. The nickname, playful yet telling, reflects both his creative focus and personality. The intent of this portrait was to capture Phil as he appeared in that moment—unposed, present, and unmistakably himself. The goggles were deliberately retained, acting as both a visual anchor and a subtle reference to his relationship with water and underwater worlds. They introduce a quiet tension between visibility and obscurity, echoing the act of observation central to photography itself.
