Daybreak

Photographed by Alex Wong Yoong Wah

At daybreak, the earth is still cool and the light arrives softly, spilling across a mud-plastered hut with a thatched roof worn by seasons. Sun flare breaks through the trees and scatters across the frame, turning dust into gold. In the foreground, children gather on the bare ground, some seated, some standing, some leaning into play, bodies relaxed, movements unguarded. This is an ordinary morning, rendered extraordinary by intimacy. A child tilts their head back in laughter; another watches quietly, eyes steady and observant. The hut behind them is both shelter and witness, its cracked walls holding the memory of many such mornings. Pots rest nearby, footprints mark the soil, and the surrounding trees stand thin and patient. Nothing here is staged. Life unfolds as it always has: communal, resilient, and open to the sun. The photograph records more than a moment; it documents a rhythm. Childhood is not separated from labor, from home, or from the land. It is embedded within them. In this shared space, play and survival coexist, and the morning light blesses them equally.
