From life to death
Photographed by Sanghamitra Sarkar
This black-and-white image portrays members of a tribal community painted in skeletal motifs, their bodies transformed into living symbols of bones and mortality. The stark contrast of white paint against dark skin evokes the visual language of death, while the upright postures and steady gazes affirm life, presence, and continuity. At the center stands a child, unpainted, framed and protected by the surrounding figures—suggesting the passage from innocence to awareness, from life toward the inevitability of death.
