Soul War
Photographed by Jan Kraus
Highly decorated Afghanistan veteran. A. was a member of the airborne troops (paratroopers) which participated in the Bundeswehr's heaviest battle since World War II in Afghanistan. In the action known as the "Good Friday Battle," three German soldiers were killed and eight others were wounded, some seriously. A. was responsible for the rescue of two dead and one seriously wounded soldier. She sustained no physical combat injury but suffers from severe post-traumatic stress disorder. Over the past few years, she has created her own „veteran motel" in the form of a small, self-sufficient farm, where other veterans can come and stay without an official medial placement. Currently, A., despite her status as a career soldier she is about to be discharged from the Bundeswehr due to her illnes, which means she will not receive pension payments. At the time the picture was taken she is 38 years old.
